TEKS Information

The Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS), comprise the state-mandated curriculum guidelines that establish what every student, from elementary school through high school, should know and be able to do. They were developed to comply with §28.002(c) and (d) of the Texas Education Code.

TAKS Information

The Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills (TAKS) is a standardized test used to assess students' attainment of skills in the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) TAKS has been developed to better reflect good instructional practice and more accurately measure student learning.   Texas high school seniors cannot graduate unless they pass exit-level TAKS tests in English language arts, social studies, math, and science.

End of Course Exams

With Senate Bill 1031 in spring 2007, Texas legislators repealed TAKS in favor of End of Course exams in high school; however, this change will happen gradually. Students who enter ninth grade in the 2011-2012 school year will have to take end-of-course exams in core subjects. Students who entered ninth grade before 2011 will still have to pass the exit-level TAKS to graduate.
